The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s update on the government’s 120-day social contract, raising concerns about unemployment, energy challenges, and environmental issues.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin, speaking on behalf of the party, challenged the government’s claims of progress. “The NDC government is creating more unemployment,” he said, referring to what he described as a growing job crisis, particularly among the youth.

On the issue of illegal mining, Afenyo Markin expressed disappointment with the administration’s handling of the problem. “Government’s inaction against illegal mining is disappointing,” he stated, adding that the galamsey situation has deteriorated further. “The galamsey situation has worsened,” he noted.

The Minority Leader also criticized the state of the energy sector. Referring to the ongoing power challenges, he remarked, “We’re looking for the Energy Minister with a torch light,” suggesting a lack of visibility and leadership in addressing the energy crisis.

The NPP’s response comes amid broader political discourse surrounding the implementation and impact of the social contract. Party officials maintain that the administration’s reported achievements do not reflect the current realities experienced by many Ghanaians.

The statements by Afenyo Markin highlight key areas of contention between the two major political parties as public scrutiny intensifies in the lead up to future national elections.
