The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to appear before Parliament’s Energy Committee today to respond to critical questions regarding ongoing power outages and the disappearance of 23 containers loaded with essential electrical equipment worth GH₵12 million.
The committee hearing, being held at the Peduase Valley Resort in the Eastern Region, comes in the wake of heightened concerns over the reliability of the power supply, the financial health of the sector, and a growing scandal involving the lost containers.
The session follows a recent briefing by Energy Minister John Jinapor, who outlined severe challenges plaguing the energy sector, including mounting debts and lapses in operational efficiency.
Other key energy stakeholders, including the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Bui Power Authority, are also expected to testify. VRA will be questioned about the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage, which led to the displacement of over 35,000 residents across 300 communities in the Volta and Eastern Regions.
Bui Power Authority will present its five-year expansion strategy, which aims to add 400 megawatts of capacity by 2028 through the deployment of solar-hybrid energy systems.
The hearing is also expected to touch on issues surrounding the potential privitisation of power distribution and revenue collection.
