Electoral Commissioner, Jane Mensa is set to report to the parliament of Ghana within this week to provide updates on the collation of the Ablekuma North constituency results.
The constituency since the last general elections in December last year has been left without parliamentary representation due to certain irregularities that were encountered during the collation of the votes casted.
Prior to this, the minority caucus in parliament on June, 4 organized a walk out demonstration to the Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra demanding for the declaration of a winner of the embattled Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary seat.
Again the minority is ready to resist any attempt by political actors that will call for the rerun of the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary elections. In reference to call made by presidential adviser, Valerie Sawyerr on the potential rerun of elections for the 62 polling stations as reported by citinewsroom, New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Elections and Research Officer in the Ablekuma North Constituency, Jones de Graft-Darkwa has stated that any attempt to rerun elections for the constituency is unfair and without constitutional basis.
He further added that the Electoral Commission is the only institution with the sole right and legal mandate to conclude on elections.
The suspension of collation of results for the constituency stems as a result of the presentation of scanned pink sheets from EC representatives of the New Patriotic Party candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie. This resulted into chaos with party faithfuls of the National Democratic Congress rejecting the scanned pink sheets presented by the NPP.
As a result of the brewing tensions, collation of election results have been on hold and the Ablekuma North constituency have been left without any representation. The EC’s appearance in parliament within this week will provide updates on the way forward in order to secure electorates of the constituency with a representation.
Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga whilst delivering the business activities in parliament for this week made this announcement.
