The Ghana Education Service (G.E.S) has announced the temporary shut down of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region admist rising inter ethnic tensions in the vicinity.
These tensions have resulted in the death of three students of the Nkwanta school; two female day students – one a form 3 student and the other a form 2 student and a male student – a form 3 student as a result of the clash in the town.
The incident which occurred on Thursday and Friday last week recorded that the two female students were returning home from school on Thursday and were caught up in a shooting incident leading to their demise. The male student on the other hand was reported to have been shot by a stray bullet in the examinations hall whilst writing mock.
As a result of this incident, the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Oti Regional Educational Directorate has announced a temporary shut of the school in a bid to prevent further future casualties.
Again, GES has announced there would be a police escorts to ensure that students arrive home safe whilst the body brainstorms further measures to bring these students back to school.
The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has in notice served his condolences to the bereaved families further commending the GES for its swift action on the temporary shut down of the institution.
However, he further advised that the GES closely monitor the situation in order to keep the the entire school body and properties intact.
The conflicts in Nkwanta has been reported to have erupted in 2021 as a result of an inter ethnic clash between the Adeles, Akyodes and the Challas. In January this year, tensions erupted again resulting into many casualties and fatalities. The Education Minister is hoping that the conflict is resolved amicably in order to resume teaching and learning activities as soon as possible.
