A disturbing video circulating on social media has stirred anxiety among Ghanaians after it captured a group of ghetto youth confronting and manhandling a man who claimed to be a police officer. The footage, reportedly filmed in an inner-city slum, shows the visibly intoxicated man missing his front teeth and clad in a police uniform being harassed by the young men.
The confrontation began after the youths accused the man of being an informant, an allegation he strongly refuted. In the video, he boldly stated that he was a police officer who had only come to the area to “have fun.” Despite his claims, the youths forced him to kneel and delivered a few mild slaps, while advising him never to return to the ghetto in uniform.
The incident, which raised questions about the man’s true identity and the ease with which police uniforms could be accessed, quickly went viral online, sparking nationwide concern over public impersonation of law enforcement officers.
In response to the incident, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of the man identified as Osei Kwame, popularly known as “Nsafufoo.” He was apprehended at Antoakrom in the Manso Nkwanta District of the Ashanti Region for unlawfully possessing and wearing a police uniform without proper authorization.
A police statement indicated that the suspect appeared intoxicated at the time of the incident and was never a member of the service. He is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
The video has triggered mixed reactions from the public, with many expressing concern over the security implications of civilians illegally wearing police uniforms. Others criticized the actions of the youth in the video, arguing that they should have handed the suspect over to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
As investigations continue, the Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public against impersonating security officers, warning that such acts are criminal and punishable by law.
