National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate Ewurabena Aubynn has secured the parliamentary seat for the Ablekuma North constituency after a fierce rerun which was held last Friday, July 11, 2025 at 19 various polling centers within the constituency.
The Ablekuma North Constituency has been left vacant and without parliamentary representation after over 6 months since the “Mahama led” government was sworn in power to take on administrative roles from the previous New Patriotic Party government.
From the December 7 polls, the constituency could not collate its election results from outstanding polling centers within the constituency with party supporters from the two political parties citing irregularities from both ends. Some party faithfuls from the National Democratic Congress (NDC ) claimed that the NPP supporters presented scanned pink sheets for collation which needed to be verified.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana had scheduled dates for the recollation of results from outstanding polling centers within the constituency to no avail. Interestingly, on December 10, 2024 the EC had declared NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn as winner of the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary seat for securing most votes against the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyieh however, it later nullified the declaration with the backing that results from 219 polling centers were used for the declaration instead of that from 281 polling station within the constituency.
The January 8 recollation of results was also unsuccessful.
On June 4, the minority caucus in parliament staged a protest to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters in Accra calling for immediate actions towards the declaration of the Ablekuma North parliamentary results but in an official release on July 2, the EC scheduled Friday July 11 for the rerun.
Eventhough the NDC leadership board were pleased with the EC’s call for a rerun, this pronouncement did not sit well with the NPP party faithfuls with their representative Nana Akua Afriyieh applying for an injunction to halt the scheduled rerun.
The High Court dismissed her application forcing her to represent at the polls against her party’s decision to boycott the elections.
Last Friday’s rerun which was characterized with chaos and electoral violence and attack on media personel and notable public figures came to an end with the declaration of NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn as MP – Elect for the Ablekuma North Constituency securing a 34,090 vote cast against NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyieh who secured a 33,881 vote cast. The total number of rejected votes are 411.
This represents a big win to the NDC because it is the first time an NDC candidate has won the parliamentary seat for the constituency since Ghana’s fourth republic in 1992. The Ablekuma North Constituency has always been considered as an NPP stronghold up until the recent rerun.
