The Bank of Ghana has officially announced an extensive line-up of programmes and activities to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Ghana cedi as the country’s sole legal tender. Themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability and Economic Resilience,” the celebration marks a major milestone in Ghana’s monetary history since the cedi was first issued on July 19, 1965.

According to a public notice released by the Bank (Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2025/19), the commemorative activities are scheduled to take place from August to December 2025, bringing together institutions, organisations, stakeholders, development partners and the general public in celebration of this national heritage.

Month-by-Month Breakdown of Activities:

AUGUST

Launch of Celebrations: The official launch will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre, setting the tone for the months ahead.

Launch of Currency Museum: This will be done in collaboration with the National Museum of Science and Technology and will feature mobile museum exhibitions to showcase the cedi’s historical evolution.

Educational Campaigns: Stakeholder engagements will be held on important topics such as proper cash handling (“Keep the cedi clean”), the currency life cycle, and identifying currency security features.

SEPTEMBER

Community Engagements: Aimed at fostering public dialogue, this phase will include outreach forums, stakeholder dialogues, interactive roadshows and a dedicated “Cedi Week.”

OCTOBER

Student Engagement: Students across the country will participate in essay and quiz competitions with themes centred on the cedi, its history, and importance to national development. The month will culminate in a “Cedi Fest.”

NOVEMBER

Cedi@60 Anniversary Currency Conference: Hosted by the Bank of Ghana in partnership with Currency Research, this conference at the Accra International Conference Centre will gather local and international stakeholders to discuss currency matters.

DECEMBER

Thanksgiving Service: A national thanksgiving service will be held to close out the celebration activities on a spiritual note.

The Bank of Ghana’s notice, signed by Secretary Sandra Thompson (Ms.), also extends an invitation to all stakeholders and the general public to actively participate in the celebrations and help highlight the significance of the cedi in Ghana’s journey toward financial sovereignty and stability.
The slogan for the anniversary reads:
“Our Cedi, Our Pride, Our Heritage”,

As Ghana reflects on 60 years of monetary independence, the Bank hopes the celebration will not only honour the past but also strengthen the public’s commitment to the integrity and sustainability of the nation’s currency.
