The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga has ordered for the indefinite shut down of the Zuarungu SHS located in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region due to the rising tensions and chaos that erupted in the school yesterday, July 20, 2025.
The violence was reported to have resulted over a mobile phone theft between two tribes; Gurune and Kusasi students.
The tension later resulted into a massive violence resulting into the burning of some parts of the school’s building. The Regional minister alarmed about the current situation has ordered for the shut down of the school.
During the protest, media reports have confirmed that four students were arrested in connection to the incident however, one of the four has managed to escape whilst being transported to the police station.
During his escape, the suspect stole one of the police’s magazines and is currently on the run.
For safety reasons, the school in collaboration with joint forces from the police and the military are assisting for the evacuation of students, especially those living in conflict prone zones to ensure their safety back home.
The School Authority is also conducting investigations into the situation surrounding the violence hoping to restore calm as soon as possible.
Students of the Zuarungu SHS will be mandated to stay at home during this period until further notice is given by the authorities.
