The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations for its presidential primaries as it gears up to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. A statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, has invited qualified party members to apply for nomination in accordance with Article 13(1)(2) of the NPP Constitution.
The nomination process opens Tuesday, July 29, 2025, and closes on Thursday, August 28, 2025. Interested aspirants can pick up nomination forms from the office of the General Secretary at the party’s national headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, within the nomination window.
Per the official notice, the non-refundable nomination form costs GHC 100,000, while the filing fee is pegged at GHC 500,000. Both fees are to be paid via bankers’ draft made payable to the New Patriotic Party Headquarters, Accra. Additionally, aspirants will be required to pay a Development Fee, the amount of which will be determined by the party’s National Council.
The party has scheduled its National Congress, where the presidential candidate will be elected for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The announcement signals the beginning of a crucial phase in the NPP’s succession plan as the party prepares for life after President John Dramani Mahama, who is serving his final term in office. Political watchers expect a competitive primary, with several prominent and emerging figures within the party expected to contest.
The NPP has reiterated its commitment to a fair and transparent process, urging aspirants and their supporters to uphold party unity and decorum throughout the period.
The 2026 primary will determine who leads the NPP into the 2028 elections as the party seeks to maintain its hold on power.
