The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has issued a strong caution to individuals and media outlets against the circulation of unsubstantiated allegations, warning that legal action will be taken against those found culpable.
According to the University, there has been a growing trend of defamatory content on social media and certain online platforms aimed at tarnishing the institution’s image and that of its key officials.
In a statement signed by its Management and copied to the Ghana News Agency, GCTU described the situation as “deeply concerning,” alleging that some of the publications are being orchestrated or influenced by individuals with personal grievances, including disgruntled former employees.
The statement specifically singled out Sankofa Online for “consistently publishing defamatory articles without seeking clarification or response from the University,” describing the outlet’s conduct as “unacceptable” and “legally questionable.”
While acknowledging that internal investigations are underway into reported cases of academic dishonesty, the University condemned what it termed as the “reckless” publication of unverified allegations without affording it the opportunity to respond.
“The Management of GCTU wishes to serve a strong and unequivocal warning to all individuals and media entities engaged in, or enabling, the spread of baseless allegations. Any platform or individual found culpable in this regard will be held accountable and made to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement read.
The University reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and academic excellence but stressed that it will not tolerate the misuse of media and digital platforms to propagate falsehoods.
To address the situation, GCTU has constituted an internal committee to assess the allegations in accordance with its disciplinary code.
The statement urged the public and stakeholders to disregard such reports unless independently verified, reiterating the institution’s focus on producing high-quality graduates to drive Ghana’s digital transformation.
