An invigilator at Forces Senior High School, Burma Camp, is under investigation after being found with examination questions on his mobile phone during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The incident occurred when a monitoring team from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) paid a surprise visit to the school. The invigilator, who had already attracted attention for his improper dressing in the examination hall, was subjected to a quick check.
The inspection revealed that his phone contained several WASSCE questions, including papers for Picture Making and Oral English. His device was immediately confiscated by the WAEC officials.
Confirming the incident, John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, stated that the invigilator’s phone was seized after pre-solved Oral English content was discovered on it. He added that the Council has ordered the invigilator to provide a written explanation as to why the prohibited device was taken into the hall and why the sensitive materials were stored on it.
Mr. Kapi further advised parents to take an active role in curbing examination malpractice by confiscating their wards’ mobile phones ahead of papers. “Parental responsibility is crucial. Phones remain the number one channel through which many of these irregularities occur,” he stressed.
WAEC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict examination standards and warned that it will not tolerate any breaches of its rules, especially from personnel entrusted with safeguarding the integrity of the process.
The development has sparked renewed concerns among stakeholders about the integrity of invigilation and the urgent need for stricter measures to protect the credibility of Ghana’s examination system.
