Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, has alleged that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) played a role in the tragic passing of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
Addressing congregants at Anyinam, the outspoken Assin Central legislator revealed that he had held several personal conversations with the deceased MP. In those discussions, Mr. Kumi reportedly lamented the heavy pressures and challenges he faced, which Agyapong claimed were instigated by the NDC.
According to him, the weight of these political pressures contributed significantly to Mr. Kumi’s untimely death.
“Ernest confided in me about the difficulties he was enduring. The stress was unbearable, and I believe the NDC’s relentless attacks pushed him to his grave,” Agyapong stated.
The NPP flagbearer hopeful further slammed the NDC for what he described as “shamelessness” in putting forward a candidate in the upcoming Akwatia by-election, following the late MP’s demise.
“For a party that contributed to the man’s stress to now rush and contest in Akwatia shows they have no shame,” he remarked.
The passing of Ernest Kumi has left the Akwatia constituency without representation, necessitating a by-election. The contest is expected to attract keen interest from both major political parties, with Kennedy Agyapong’s remarks likely to spark heated political debate in the run-up.
