National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has criticised past attempts to undermine the name and historical importance of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
According to Mr Asiedu Nketiah, it was unfortunate and shameful that efforts were made at certain points to discredit Dr Nkrumah, particularly given the recognition and respect the former president has received across Africa and beyond.
He said Dr Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and the broader Pan-African struggle has earned him a place of significance in the history of the continent.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah made the remarks at the launch of the Nkrumah Fest, an initiative spearheaded by the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to celebrate the life, achievements and enduring legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
He noted that the continued recognition of Dr Nkrumah around the world demonstrates the importance of preserving and accurately telling his story to future generations.
The Nkrumah Fest is aimed at commemorating the former president’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and his vision for African unity and development.
The initiative forms part of activities celebrating the legacy of Dr Nkrumah and encouraging renewed public discussion about his ideas, leadership and contribution to Ghana and Africa.
The event has also provided a platform for political leaders, traditional authorities, academics and members of the public to reflect on Dr Nkrumah’s historical significance and the relevance of his vision to contemporary Africa.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s comments come as Ghana joins in commemorating Founders’ Day, with renewed attention on the role played by Dr Nkrumah and other key figures in the country’s struggle for independence.
