A devastating tragedy has struck the family of Theophilus Ansah, an 18-year-old final-year science student at Ghana National College in Cape Coast.
Theophilus passed away on June 28, 2024, after allegedly being neglected by school authorities when he fell ill. His family is now demanding justice and accountability from the school.
According to family sources, Theophilus had complained of ill health to his mother, who directed him to seek treatment at the school infirmary. However, he found no one at the facility. Despite his condition worsening, Theophilus insisted on writing his mock exams but vomited profusely during the test. The school authorities eventually rushed him to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he tragically passed away.
The family alleges that the school’s negligence led to Theophilus’ death. Family spokesperson Ms. Lucy Quianoo expressed their outrage and grief, stating that the school’s inaction and lack of concern contributed to the tragic outcome. “The school authorities showed a callous disregard for Theophilus’ well-being, and their negligence cost him his life,” she said.
The family is demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Theophilus’ death and appropriate action against the school authorities. They are also calling for measures to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again.
This heart-wrenching incident raises concerns about the level of care and support provided to students in Ghanaian schools. It is essential that schools prioritize students’ health and well-being, and that accountability is ensured when failures occur.
