Two of Ghana’s most iconic musicians, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, and Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, were honored at the National Honours and Awards 2024 for their remarkable contributions to the country’s creative arts industry.
The ceremony, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, saw the two music legends receive the Grand Medal for their faithful and loyal service to the nation.
They were joined by actress and filmmaker Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante in the Creative Arts category.
Renowned filmmaker Kwaw Paintsil Ansah also received the prestigious Order of the Volta (Member) award.
The National Honours and Awards ceremony, established in 1960 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, recognizes individuals and institutions that have made distinguished contributions to Ghana’s development.
This year’s event also introduced the Presidential Honours and Awards for Distinguished Service, created by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2023 to acknowledge extraordinary contributions made during the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Akufo-Addo praised the resilience and collaboration displayed by citizens, institutions, and international partners in safeguarding lives and mobilizing resources during the crisis.
The honors span several categories, including the Grand Medal, the Order of the Volta, and the Order of the Star of Ghana. The ceremony aims to celebrate creativity, excellence, and hard work in various fields of endeavor, shining a spotlight on the enduring dedication and accomplishments of those who have served Ghana with distinction.
Daddy Lumba and Gyedu-Blay Ambolley’s contributions to Ghanaian music are undeniable. With careers spanning decades, they have entertained and inspired generations of music lovers.
