The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has announced an exciting new initiative aimed at promoting and preserving highlife music. Starting next year, MUSIGA will present special prizes to winners in the highlife category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
According to MUSIGA President Bessa Simons, this initiative seeks to motivate highlife musicians and assist in reviving the genre. Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, Bessa Simons highlighted the importance of preserving highlife, which has long been a vital part of Ghana’s musical heritage.
This announcement comes amidst a renewed focus on promoting highlife, following UNESCO’s consideration of the genre as an intangible cultural heritage of Ghana. Moreover, the success of Nigeria’s Afrobeats movement has ignited a sense of urgency among Ghanaian highlife advocates to reclaim their musical roots and tap into the global market.
By introducing these special awards, MUSIGA hopes to incentivize highlife musicians and contribute to the genre’s resurgence on the international music scene.
