The Government of Ghana has successfully evacuated a Ghanaian national, Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah, after a disturbing xenophobic incident in South Africa sparked widespread concern on social media.

A viral video circulating online showed Asamoah and other foreign nationals being harassed by a group of individuals accusing them of taking jobs meant for locals. The footage triggered outrage among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, reigniting conversations around the safety and protection of citizens living outside the country.

In an official statement, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that Asamoah has safely returned to Ghana. He disclosed that Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, personally accompanied the victim during the evacuation process to ensure his safety.

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad, particularly in situations of distress. He further noted that citizens seeking relocation assistance can reach out to the Ghana High Commission, with the government prepared to facilitate their return at its own expense.

Emphasizing the administration’s stance, the Minister stated that the government “values every Ghanaian life anywhere in the world” and will continue to take decisive action to protect its citizens wherever they may be.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the recurring issue of xenophobia in parts of South Africa, prompting calls for stronger diplomatic engagement and protective measures for foreign nationals across the region.
