Govt. to Transfer Unemployed Nurses Abroad – Mintah Akandoh

By: Deborah Amewoyi

Health minister designate, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has hinted on governments plan to migrate unemployed health professions to countries in need of health personnel.

During his vetting in parliament on Friday, January 31, 2025, the health minister designate acknowledged the need to liaise with international bodies in order to salvage the rising unemployment rate in the Ghanaian health system.

Notably, Mr. Akandoh raised concerns regarding the increasing rate of unemployed nurses due to the limitations on the amount of money allocated to health personnel under the Ghana health service. “The challenge largely stems from constraints on the wage bill. Therefore, we need to establish links with other countries to facilitate the migration of these professionals and create employment opportunities for them.” he explained.

Despite several brain drain concerns in the health ministry, the health minister designate believes that the initiative has the potential not to only benefit the unemployed health professionals by providing employment but also enhance Ghana’s healthcare system globally.
