President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to clear the Agbogbloshie waste site in Accra and transform the area into a textile manufacturing facility.
According to the President, the project is part of efforts to create jobs and provide sustainable livelihoods for young people, particularly Kayayes who currently make a living carrying goods in markets.
President Mahama said the government intends to train more than 1,000 Kayayes and employ them to work at the proposed textile factory once it becomes operational.
“We’re clearing the Agbogbloshie waste site to build a textile factory, train over 1,000 Kayayes and employ them to work in it,” President Mahama said.
The initiative is expected to combine environmental redevelopment with skills training and job creation. The redevelopment of the site would also form part of broader efforts to give the area a new economic purpose while providing opportunities for people who depend on informal work for their livelihoods.
The President’s announcement highlights the government’s focus on linking infrastructure development with employment opportunities, particularly for young people and vulnerable groups.
The proposed textile factory is expected to provide training and employment opportunities while contributing to Ghana’s local textile industry.
If implemented, the project could mark a major change in the use of the Agbogbloshie site, while giving more than 1,000 Kayayes an opportunity to acquire new skills and transition into formal employment.
