Mobile money vendors in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region have suspended their services indefinitely to protest a series of violent robbery attacks targeting their members.
The decision, announced by the Mobile Money Vendors Association, aims to ensure the safety of its members following 12 armed robbery incidents in the municipality over the past three months, eight of which targeted mobile money operators.
Four mobile money shops, just in August 2024, were looted by armed men, resulting in thousands of Ghana Cedis stolen and two fatalities.
Despite four suspects being arrested, their release on bail has raised further concerns about safety and the adequacy of the legal response.
The association’s chairman, Tahiru Issahaku, explained that suspending services is necessary to protect members from harm.
Channel One News’ investigation confirmed that mobile money operators are adhering to the directive, with shops closed in Tumu and surrounding communities.
Stranded customers are feeling the impact of the strike and are calling for urgent action to address the situation.
Meanwhile. the Sissala East Municipal Police Command declined to comment on camera.
However, there are growing concerns that security must be improved to allow residents to continue their businesses, especially in an area considered the food basket of the Upper West Region.
