The Right to Information (RTI) Commission has initiated a campaign to educate the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) about the RTI Act. This event, held on August 13, 2024, at the Command Officers’ Mess in Burma Camp, seeks to enhance transparency and accountability within the military.
Major General Joseph Aphour, Deputy Chief of Staff, underscored the importance of the campaign in empowering citizens to utilize their constitutional right to access information.
Madam Benedicta Agyapomah Nunney, representing the RTI Commission, outlined the obligations of public institutions under the law, which include maintaining accurate records, establishing information units, and submitting annual reports.
Senior commission official Raphael Osei Bonsu addressed the issue of exemptions and penalties, noting that while certain information is protected, no institution is completely exempt from the law.
Brigadier General Charles Gbekle, Director General for Legal Services, recognized the military’s duty to comply with the RTI Act, emphasizing the need to balance transparency with the protection of sensitive information related to state security.
This campaign represents a crucial move towards enhancing transparency and accountability within Ghana’s military, reflecting the nation’s dedication to democratic governance and empowering its citizens.
