Six Major Health Unions Oppose Tenure Extension for Korle Bu CEO

By: Emmanuel Amoah

Six leading health unions have collectively petitioned the Ministry of Health to oppose the extension of Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah’s tenure as CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Representing a wide range of healthcare professionals, these unions formally expressed their objections in a statement issued on July 26, 2024.

Their opposition is grounded in several key concerns, including operational inefficiencies attributed to the CEO’s frequent absences, significant delays in obtaining approvals leading to shortages of essential supplies, and potential conflicts of interest where the CEO’s personal pursuits may diverge from the hospital’s objectives.

The unions cautioned that extending Dr. Ampomah’s tenure could have serious repercussions, such as hindering the hospital’s progress, adversely affecting staff morale, and compromising patient care.

The unions involved in this collective action include the Health Service Workers Union, the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professionals (Korle Bu Chapter), the Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana, the Korle Bu Senior Staff Association, the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association, and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association.
