The Government has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to spearhead the operational aspect of a nationwide clean-up exercise aimed at reducing the risk of flooding, improving sanitation, and enhancing public safety across the country.
Speaking on the initiative, Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah, Director General of Joint Operations for the Ghana Armed Forces, said the exercise will focus on restoring public safety, improving environmental sanitation, and preventing secondary disasters that often arise after heavy rainfall and flooding.
According to him, the nationwide operation forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and protect lives and property, particularly in flood-prone communities.
Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah further disclosed that structures illegally erected within waterways and those posing an immediate threat to public safety may be removed where necessary as part of the exercise. He stressed that such actions are intended to ensure the free flow of water through drainage systems and reduce the risk of flooding.
The operation is expected to involve collaboration between the Ghana Armed Forces and other state agencies responsible for sanitation, disaster management, and local governance to ensure an effective and coordinated response.
Government believes the intervention will not only improve sanitation nationwide but also help prevent avoidable disasters during the rainy season, while reinforcing public safety in vulnerable communities.
