Accra, Ghana — New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has met with the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) at the PSG House in Accra as part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders.

The meeting focused on strategies to position Ghana as West Africa’s leading pharmaceutical production hub, with discussions centred on expanding local drug manufacturing, improving the regulatory environment and strengthening support for pharmacists.

Dr Bawumia and the society’s leadership also explored ways to promote stronger public-private partnerships to support the growth of Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry.

Increasing local pharmaceutical production could help strengthen the country’s capacity to manufacture medicines, reduce dependence on imported pharmaceutical products and create opportunities for investment and employment.

The discussions further highlighted the importance of streamlining regulatory processes to create a more supportive environment for pharmaceutical manufacturers while maintaining the required standards for the safety and quality of medicines.

Support for pharmacists also featured among the key areas of discussion, reflecting the role of pharmaceutical professionals in healthcare delivery and the development of the local pharmaceutical sector.

Stronger collaboration between government, private businesses and industry professionals could help attract investment, improve production capacity and expand access to quality medicines.

The engagement forms part of Dr Bawumia’s ongoing stakeholder consultations, through which he is discussing sector-specific issues and exploring proposals aimed at addressing challenges and identifying opportunities for national development.

Ghana’s ambition to become a major pharmaceutical manufacturing centre in West Africa would require sustained investment, effective regulation, skilled professionals and cooperation between the public and private sectors.

Further details on specific proposals, implementation plans and timelines arising from the meeting were not provided in the information available.
