The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken drastic action against some of its members in the Agona West constituency, sacking 280 members, including former Gender Minister, Cynthia Mamle Morrison. The reason behind this move is reportedly due to their support for independent candidates, which goes against the party’s rules.
Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West, had announced her decision to run as an independent candidate after losing the NPP parliamentary primary to Christopher Arthur. This decision was seen as a breach of party loyalty, leading to her expulsion.
The NPP’s decision to sack these members sends a strong message about the party’s commitment to discipline and loyalty. However, it also raises questions about the party’s approach to internal conflicts and the treatment of its members.
Some of the members sacked include:
- Cynthia Mamle Morrison, former Gender Minister and incumbent MP for Agona West
- 15 polling station executives
- 20 electoral area coordinators
- 5 constituency executives
- Over 200 grassroots supporters
The affected members have been given a chance to appeal the decision, but it remains to be seen how this development will impact the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
