Akwatia MP – Ernest Yaw Kumi Dies At 41.

Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency, Ernest Yaw kumi has reportedly died at the age of 41.

Media reports have indicated that according to close family sources, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) representative of parliament has passed on today, Monday, July 7, 2025 without indicating the cause of his death. Other reports have also indicated that the MP was present during parliamentary sitting last Thursday, July 3, 2025.

Upon confirming news of his demise, the Eastern Regional Executive Committee in a short release signed by the Eastern Regional Communications Officer, Evans Osei Yeboah commiserated with the bereaved family. “We extend our deepest condolences to his immediate family, the chiefs and people of the Akwatia Constituency, and the entire NPP fraternity across the country.” he sympathized.

The committee further revealed that Mr. Kumi’s demise comes as a shock to the committee, the NPP party and the country at large underscoring his dedication and his level of commitment within the constituency.

The late Ernest Yaw Kumi was a first time MP representing the the Akwatia Constituency in parliament. His election into power was coupled with controversies and allegations that his victory was based on the premise of irregularities and was scheduled before the Koforidua high court for further deliberations into the outcome of the parliamentary elections results.

The case was escalated to the highest court of the land after an arrest warrant was issued against the MP for defiling an injunction resulting to contempt of court.

However, the Supreme court in a 4 – 1 majority decision quashed the ruling of the Koforidua high court with the interpretation that the initial judgement by the Koforidua high court presided over by Justice Amedahe was served from a biased judicial point of view.

The MP resumed full parliamentary duties after this pronouncement until he passed on today.

Prior to the news confirming his death, the late MP’s seat in parliament has been enwraped with red clothing as a significant sign of his demise as parliament also mourns his departure. The parliament after observing a moment of silence in honour of the deceased have adjourned its proceedings to tomorrow July 8, 2025 in honor of the late Member of Parliament.
