GN Bank Set to Resume Operations in 2026 After Licence Restoration.

By: Kenneth Appiah Bani

In a major development for Ghana’s banking sector, GN Bank is set to resume full operations in 2026 following the restoration of its licence by the government of President John Dramani Mahama.

The bank, owned by Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, had its licence revoked in 2019 under the Akufo-Addo administration during the financial sector clean-up exercise. The move sparked widespread debate at the time, as GN Bank had been one of the country’s indigenous financial institutions with a strong presence, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

President Mahama’s government has since taken steps to restore the bank’s licence, assuring Ghanaians that the institution will be fully operational next year. The listening President, the people’s President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has reinstated the licence of GN Bank, and it will resume operations in 2026. Congratulations in advance, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom.

The revocation of GN Bank’s licence in 2019 had significant consequences. Many Ghanaians lost their jobs, while some individuals’ funds were locked up. Workers repeatedly hit the streets in protest, demanding justice and the reopening of the bank. For now, customers and Ghanaians at large are happy that GN Bank is finally making a comeback to support them.

GN Bank’s return is expected to create jobs, restore confidence in local banking, and provide a significant boost to small businesses and communities that relied on its services. The restoration also marks a broader effort by the Mahama administration to strengthen indigenous businesses and rebuild trust in Ghana’s financial landscape.

With operations slated to begin in 2026, customers and stakeholders are eagerly anticipating the bank’s return, with hopes that GN Bank will once again contribute to deepening financial access across the country.
