Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, , has distanced himself from comments that appeared on his social media platforms criticizing Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation.

In a post shared on his social media handles, Afenyo-Markin was quoted as saying, “A law that imprisons people for their sexual orientation or who they choose to love does not protect society.” The statement quickly attracted widespread public attention and sparked debate across social and political circles, with many interpreting it as opposition to the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill currently before Parliament.

The remarks generated mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with some praising the statement as a call for human rights and inclusivity, while others criticized it as being inconsistent with the position of many lawmakers supporting the bill.

However, shortly after the post gained traction online, Afenyo-Markin issued another statement on his social media platforms, claiming that his account had been compromised. He denied authoring the earlier message and sought to distance himself from its contents.

“My account was compromised,” he stated, dismissing suggestions that he had personally argued against the anti-LGBTQ bill or accused Parliament of overstepping its authority by passing legislation that could impose prison terms based on individuals’ sexual conduct.

The development has raised questions about the authenticity of the initial post and the circumstances surrounding the alleged compromise of the Minority Leader’s social media account. It has also reignited public discussion on the anti-LGBTQ bill, one of the most debated legislative proposals in Ghana’s recent history.

As of now, no further details have been provided regarding the alleged breach of Afenyo-Markin’s social media account, and there has been no official indication of any investigation into the matter.

The incident underscores the growing influence of social media in shaping political discourse and the challenges public officials face in managing and securing their digital platforms.
