Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has called for a national review of the current age limit for enlistment into Ghana’s military services.

In a post shared on his Facebook page, the Minister urged the government and relevant authorities to reconsider the existing enlistment policy, which he believes unfairly restricts many capable young Ghanaians from serving their country simply because they are above the current age threshold.

“I honestly believe it is time for our beloved Nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services,” Sam George wrote.
“There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age.”

The Minister proposed that the upper age limit for enlistment be extended to 35 years, arguing that such a reform would align Ghana with practices in other parts of the world, where physically fit individuals in their 30s are welcomed into the armed forces.

He emphasized that this policy shift would not only create more opportunities for the youth but also strengthen the nation’s human resource base within the security sector.

“There is precedence across the world. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill it. For God and Country,” he added.

Hon. Sam George’s proposal has since sparked discussions among citizens and policy watchers, many of whom have expressed support for the idea, describing it as timely and inclusive.

If implemented, the review could mark a significant step toward expanding access to national service opportunities for a broader range of Ghanaians eager to contribute to national defense and development.
