Minority leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin in a release has petitioned the inspector general of police Christian Tetteh Yohuno for investigations and disciplinary actions against one Constable Forson who he [Afenyo-Markin ] allegedly claims assaulted him at the entrance of the parliament house during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ protest.
Recounting the incident, the minority leader asserted that one Constable Forson physically assaulted him in what he described as a “reprehensible and disgraceful act of violence perpetrated against him by a uniformed police officer.”
Discriptively, Afenyo-Markin indicated that the police officer deliberately strucked the left side of his chest with full force of his [constable Forson’s ] right palm directly near Afenyo-Markin’s heart.
Afenyo – Markin indicated that ‘the act of violence’ reportedly dazed him and without assistance from other officers, he would have collapsed.
However, the Ghana Police Service upon reviewing several video footages in relation to the altercation between the minority leader and the said police officer is calling on the minority leader to assist in the ongoing investigation related to the incident.
Notably, the police service have revealed that the speaker of parliament have been petitioned to release Alexander Afenyo-Markin to aid in the ongoing investigations. The said officer involved will also be assisting with the investigations – the police service added.
This incident has resulted into varying factions from the media and members of the minority who were present at the Save the Judiciary protest yesterday May 5, 2025. Scenes from video footages circulating on various social media platforms saw the minority leader physically attacking the police officer in question.
Significantly, director of communications for the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah during a media interaction asserted that the officer hit the minority leader first. He described the minority leader’s action in the viral video footage as a reflex to the police officer’s initial attack. He indicated that any case of assault should be against the police officer.
