The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has embarked on an inspection tour of some of Accra’s major flood-prone communities following Monday’s torrential rains, which left several areas inundated and disrupted the movement of residents and motorists.
The visit was aimed at assessing the extent of flooding, identifying critical drainage challenges, and evaluating areas requiring urgent intervention to reduce the risk of future flooding.
During the tour, Dr. Agyepong observed that many drains and waterways had become heavily choked with silt, plastic waste, and other forms of debris, preventing the free flow of rainwater. He noted that these blockages continue to be one of the leading causes of flash floods in the capital whenever there is heavy rainfall.
According to him, the assessment demonstrates the renewed commitment of the Jospong Group of Companies, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, and Dredge Masters to complement government efforts in addressing the country’s recurring flooding challenges through sustainable environmental management and drainage maintenance.
He explained that the intervention will involve extensive desilting and dredging of major drains, the removal of accumulated plastic waste and other solid materials from waterways, and the restoration of drainage channels to improve the movement of stormwater during the rainy season.
Dr. Agyepong stressed that regular maintenance of drains is essential in preventing floods and protecting lives, businesses, and public infrastructure. He added that proactive measures, rather than emergency responses after floods occur, remain the most effective way to minimise the devastating effects of heavy rainfall.
He further noted that while climate change has contributed to more intense rainfall events in recent years, human activities such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains, illegal structures on waterways, and poor sanitation practices continue to worsen the flooding situation.
The Executive Chairman called on residents, local authorities, and community leaders to work together in protecting drainage infrastructure by ensuring drains are kept free from waste and by discouraging activities that obstruct the natural flow of water.
He reiterated that environmental sanitation should not be viewed solely as the responsibility of government institutions but as a shared national responsibility requiring the active participation of every citizen.
Officials from Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Dredge Masters who accompanied Dr. Agyepong during the inspection indicated that preparations are underway to deploy specialised equipment and technical teams to begin desilting and dredging operations in identified hotspots.
The exercise is expected to target major drains and waterways that have suffered years of accumulated silt and waste.
The initiative forms part of the Jospong Group’s broader commitment to supporting national development through environmental sanitation, waste management, and climate resilience. The company says it will continue collaborating with relevant state institutions to strengthen flood prevention measures and help build cleaner, safer, and more resilient communities across Ghana.

Monday’s heavy rains triggered flooding in several parts of Accra, affecting homes, businesses, and major roads while disrupting economic activities. The latest intervention by the Jospong Group is expected to complement ongoing efforts to improve drainage systems and reduce the impact of flooding during the peak of the rainy season.
