Four individuals, including three Ghanaians and one Chinese national, have been arrested for manipulating Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters, causing financial losses exceeding GH¢77,000.
Among the suspects are an ECG agent and his employee, who are accused of tampering with the meters and selling them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing company for GH¢1,200. The employee, Ernest Afatsawu, and the agent, Wisdom Sewlorm, are under investigation.
Rulian Shan, the manager of the Chinese firm, and his sales manager, Ali Yakubu, were detained on August 2. The suspects appeared in court on Wednesday, facing charges related to power theft and meter tampering.
Following these events, ECG terminated its contract with the implicated contractor. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full extent of the tampering and any associated tax evasion.
Paul Abariga, Director of Investigation, Prosecution, and Security, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that tampered meters have been found in various parts of their operational area.
The ECG has called on the public to report any instances of meter tampering or power theft to help prevent further financial losses.
