The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 10,000 vials of medicines to Ghana to aid in the treatment of patients affected by cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in the northern regions of the country.
The donation follows an outbreak of the disease in the Upper West Region, where 1,029 suspected cases have been reported, including 22 confirmed cases and 18 deaths. Currently, 29 patients are receiving treatment, with three in critical condition.
The medicines, which are expected to support the treatment of approximately 300 patients, are part of WHO’s technical assistance aimed at complementing the government’s efforts to control the outbreak.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, WHO Country Representative, Dr. Frank Lule, urged residents of the affected communities to seek medical attention promptly to enhance their chances of recovery.
This intervention underscores WHO’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s public health response and ensuring the wellbeing of communities impacted by the outbreak.
